Title: Every Child is an Artist – Arts Education: A Guide for Parents Article
Word Count: about 1500 words
Abstract:
Research has shown that children educated in the arts earn better grades, perform better on standardized tests and are more engaged in academic pursuits. Yet, the current focus in schools on high-stakes testing in a few core subjects has put the arts at risk of being lost as part of the core curriculum in the nation’s schools. Find out about current trends in arts education, what you can do to advocate for arts education in your children’s schools, and how to foster an appreciation for art in your children.
Excerpt:
Pablo Picasso once said, “ Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Parents and schools have tremendous influence on whether children retain their innate artistic spirit as they grow up.
Research has shown that involvement in art fosters tolerance, critical thinking skills, creativity, imagination and self-confidence in children. S tudents educated in the arts earn better grades and perform better on standardized tests. According to a Stanford University study, children who study the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, three times more likely to be elected class officer and four times more likely to enter math and science fairs. Young artists participate in youth groups and community service four times more often than their peers, and are twice as likely to read for pleasure.
Yet a recent report from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) warns that the arts are increasingly at risk of being lost as part of the core curriculum in the nation’s schools.
Commitment to the arts from local school boards and administrators, along with advocacy for arts education by parents and concerned citizens can ensure that children continue to reap the proven benefits of arts education. So how can parents influence what’s happening with arts education in their children’s schools? . . .
